Overview
The Renters’ Rights Act has updated the rights and responsibilities of landlords, letting agents, and tenants.
Key changes
Some of the key changes include:
- Landlords can no longer use "no-fault" evictions (Section 21) to force tenants to leave
- Tenancies no longer have a fixed end date. They will continue until the tenant or landlord ends them in the right way
- Tenants have stronger protection against unfair treatment and unsafe or poor-quality homes
Tenants
As a tenant you will get more security in your home and better living conditions. You should also have more confidence to report problems without worrying about being evicted.
Landlords
As a landlord you have enhanced regulation and must provide higher property standards. The Act also provides clearer legal requirements for evictions. You can still ask a tenant to leave if you have a legal reason to do so.
