Use your loaf – give new life to old toasters

A Trafford councillor has backed an initiative which encourages people to donate or recycle their old and broken toasters, and any other small electrical items.
Cllr Stephen Adshead, Executive Member for Environmental Services, showed his support for the new Love Your Old Toaster initiative which launched at the Trafford Centre this weekend.
He was one of the first visitors to the campaign’s giant toaster, which has been installed as a collection point where people can drop off any unwanted small electrical goods.
Cllr Adshead, said:
“Responsible recycling, or giving new life to unwanted electricals is a vital element in our fight against climate change. Sadly, over 75% of waste electricals still end up in landfill, often causing soil and water contamination. If more people recycled them, we could make a big difference, and it really couldn’t be easier. Bring them down to the Trafford Centre at the moment or take them to one of Trafford’s Household Waste Recycling Centres."
Love Your Old Toaster initiative is part of the Recycle Your Electricals campaign, which is run by not-for-profit organisation Material Focus.
It is supported by REPIC – a leading provider of producer responsibility solutions for waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). REPIC finances the collection and treatment of end of life products on behalf of its producer members to help them comply with their regulatory obligations cost-effectively.
REPIC’s Chief Executive, Louise Grantham, said:
“If everyone who we had a chat with over the weekend, went home and cleared out their hoarded electricals, batteries and cables and responsibly recycled them at one of the 5,000 electrical and battery recycling points across the UK we’d be well on our way to making a big collective difference.”
