The toast of the UK! Altrincham Market remains a standout success a decade after being crowned the country’s Best Local Market.

After taking the top honour at the Observer Food Monthly Awards in 2015, Altrincham Market continues to thrive as we head towards 2026.

Its popularity shows no sign of fading, with hundreds of shoppers filling the market in the run up to Christmas 2025 and sales and footfall expected to soar once again during the festive season.

Visitors can browse an inspiring mix of vintage fashion, furniture, home and garden finds, alongside contemporary crafts.

Independent traders bring the market to life, including Green & Grounded, Martin Ceramics, WH Harding, Don Grant, Fresh Flowers, Mayfly Jewellery, Tailors of Altrincham, B&V Trading, One Small Step, Get Swank Style, Coupes Creations, Warrens Fruit and Veg, Lovingly Artisan, W&E Greene Luggage & Bags, Chorlton Cheese Mongers, Whites Fruit and Veg and Bloomin’ Flower & Plants.

The Alt. Great British Christmas Market is bursting with festive favourites, from talented makers and creators to cooks, artists and potters.

Exceptional food and drink are at the heart of the experience, with festive flavours on offer in the Market House from vendors such as Tender Cow, Eat Picos, Honest Crust, Rubens Mezze, Great Northern Pie Company, Sam Joseph, Blackjack Brew Company, Reserve Wines and Market House Coffee. Over on New Market Square, Bounceback Food and Woody’s Café provide the perfect spot for a relaxed catch up with family or friends.

The market’s success reflects a wider resurgence in the town centre. In 2024 and 2025, Altrincham welcomed 8.4 million visitors, a 5.7 per cent increase on the previous year, driven by the strength of independent retailers and the draw of attractions like the market.

This revival marks a remarkable turnaround. In 2010, Altrincham was labelled a ghost town in the national press, with a third of its shops standing empty. Today’s thriving scene is the result of nearly a decade of dedicated work by Trafford Council, Altrincham’s business community and the Altrincham Business Improvement District (BID), established in 2016 and recently backed to continue for another five years.  Altrincham stands as a great example of public and private sector partnership working.

Cllr Liz Patel, executive member for economy and regeneration at Trafford Council, said:

"Altrincham Market is a huge success story and has definitely acted as the blueprint for many town centre markets across the UK. It’s vibrant drinks and food scene as well as the importance of its independent retailers have helped to fuel the success of Altrincham as a whole. Long may this success continue.”
