Trafford Council is proposing improvements to a key route for people walking, wheeling and cycling between Stretford, Old Trafford and the city centre.
The junction where Talbot Road, Warwick Road and Brian Statham Way meet, near Old Trafford – part of Stretford Cycleway – is in line for remodelling.
The intersection is also a busy area for people travelling to and from Old Trafford football and cricket grounds, nearby tram stops, schools and colleges and new housing developments.
Residents are invited to have their say on the proposals from Trafford Council, funded through the government’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement.
An online consultation is now open until Sunday 7 June. There will also be a public drop-in event on Wednesday 27 May from 10am to 11am at the Library / Reception area in Trafford Town Hall.
Under the draft plans, changes to the junction, could include:
The junction is currently regarded as a ‘missing link’ in recent developments to create a seamless strategic cycle network along the A56 corridor, to the benefit of people walking, wheeling and cycling.
Cllr Tom Ross, Trafford Council’s Executive Leader, said:
“Now the Talbot Road, Warwick Road and Brian Statham Way junction is the only major signalised junction on the Stretford Cycleway without an upgrade.
“This is resulting in a critical gap in the continuity and safety of the route for cyclists, people wheeling, and pedestrians.
“The proposed work will fully join up our good work in the area and continue to encourage active travel wherever possible, in line with the Council’s priority to address climate change. We want as many people as possible to chip in with their thoughts and ideas that could help inform and refine the programme.”
The proposal ties in with the wider Civic Quarter Action Plan and Lumina Village redevelopment, which set to see access to Brian Statham Way transformed into a fully pedestrianised processional route on matchdays incorporating changes part-funded by the developers.
