Adult learners have been learning textile craft skills to help them gain knowhow that could help them to find work or start a business.
Trafford Council worked with the Workers’ Educational Association and St John’s Centre in Old Trafford to facilitate two Sewing Into Business courses, run with funding from Greater Manchester Combined Authority’s devolved adult skills fund budget.
The aim was to help people to build confidence and work towards becoming economically active. Participants displayed their work in a showcase celebration for family and friends at St John’s Centre.
This beginner-friendly course offered an introduction to popular textile crafts for new starters or those looking to refresh basic skills.
Students learned how to handle yarns, fabrics, tools, and equipment safely and effectively. They were also introduced to hand-stitching, basic sewing machine use, fabric cutting and finishing methods.
Tutor Nasim Akhtar said:
“Each and every learner made several garments. They started off with tote bags and moved on to clothing. Now some learners want to go into business, others want to make things for their families. I’m proud of each and every one.”
Learner Sadia Ansary said:
“On the first day I was full of nerves but I developed confidence in pattern making and design, and my creative mindset. I met lots of likeminded people from diverse backgrounds. Now I am planning to open an online store.”
Fellow participant Aisha Morse said:
“A massive thanks must go to our tutor Nasim who had an uncanny way of teaching us, whatever we wanted to do. She has gone over and above.”
Anessia Miller added:
“Nasim supported us in our projects instead of saying ‘you’re just a beginner, that is too difficult for you’. She gave us confidence to enjoy the challenge.”
Emma Wilton, Deputy Manager at St John’s Centre, said:
“This amazing show was a great example of what St John’s is all about – working in partnership to build people’s confidence and skills, and bringing our diverse community together.”
Cllr Liz Patel, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Economy and Regeneration said:
“The Council and partners deliver a range of support to help people get into work, start businesses, or become economically active again after time away from employment.
“This course was just one route to support people to gain confidence, brush up on skills and learn new ones. The learners produced some great work, building knowhow to take forward into new ventures.”
