Trafford's Cared for Children Celebration, organised by Trafford Council, highlighted the achievements, talents and resilience of children in care, providing an opportunity for them to celebrate their successes and spend time together enjoying a range of fun activities.

Almost 200 children were nominated for awards that included ‘Amazing Learner’, ‘Sport Star’, ‘Helping Others’ and ‘All Out Achiever’ with stories shared of children and young people who despite challenging starts in life are showing tremendous aspiration and resilience to excel in many areas. There was also recognition for some of Trafford’s incredible foster carers for the vital job that they do in providing loving and secure homes for the children in their care.

A highlight of the day was a series of exceptional performances by talented young people, including musical pieces, singing, and a powerful original poem reflecting on the experience of growing up in care. Afterwards families enjoyed bouncy castles, ball games, juggling, roller skating, facepainting and hair-braiding, fuelled by wood-fired pizza and a visit from a local ice cream van that went down a treat!

Cllr George Devlin, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Babies, Children and Young People said:

“It was a privilege to be at this fantastic event and celebrate the many achievements of our cared for children and young people in Trafford. The resilience and determination of these young people is inspiring to witness and we are committed to ensuring they have every opportunity to thrive.

“Events like this are so important in recognising the experiences of our children and young people. It’s about celebrating who they are and making sure they feel valued and supported.”

The annual celebration also had generous support from businesses ReEngagED, Baltimore Consulting and One Trafford, reflecting Trafford’s strong partnership approach to corporate parenting, with the message that the whole community has a part to play in supporting cared for children to aim high and reach their potential.

The headline sponsor was ReEngagED, a provision for students who struggle to thrive within their mainstream school, with many at risk of being permanently excluded due to behaviour and SEND needs not being able to be fully met within a mainstream setting. ReEngaged provides bespoke academic and practical courses tailored to each individual student to allow them to thrive, learn new skills and re-engage with learning.

ReEngagED Managing Director Steve Casey said:

“It was a privilege to participate in such an event, that recognises the outstanding achievements of so many of Trafford’s young residents. It was inspiring to hear the stories and achievements of young people who have overcome significant barriers.  I am sure they will continue to achieve great things in the future and I am already looking forward to next year's event.”
