£2m streetlighting replacement programme in Trafford is complete

Trafford’s streetlights are shining bright after more than 500 column replacements this winter.
The £2m improvement programme has been completed on time and on budget by the One Trafford Partnership.
Work followed an annual audit of the condition of all 27,000 streetlights in the borough last year which revealed 467 needed to be removed and renewed.
A total of 7% of inspected lamp posts were found to require replacement – a higher proportion than usual, due to the similar age of some columns that were erected during a busy time for installation in the 1980s.
Efficient working practices meant team member were able to replace more than 500 tired lamp posts with their allocated budget.
Where old, heritage-style lanterns were dismantled, carefully-sourced replacements with a similar look were installed. All newly-installed streetlights are LED, helping the Council meet its target of carbon neutrality by 2038.
Engineers will begin the next structural testing phase for 2026/27 in the Spring, which will lead to a detailed plan for next year’s round of replacements.
Sites of busy junctions, or those near schools, nurseries, nursing homes or other facilities are prioritised, as well as places where there has been a history of traffic collisions.
Cllr Stephen Adshead, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Highways, Environmental and Traded Services, said:
“We’re pleased to have delivered this programme and that our team has maximised resources to achieve more than expected.
“Our aim is for Trafford to continue to proactively maintain a safe and reliable lighting network. As always, we thank residents for their patience while we undertook work on their streets, including replacing any lamps that were out.”
