Ashley Road Railway Bridge in Hale has been closed between Heather Road and South Downs Road for several weeks to allow the refurbishments to take place. Signs advising of diversions are in place.

Trafford Council is working with partners to deliver the programme which will maintain the safety and structural integrity of bridge number 171, which carries traffic over the Manchester-Holyhead railway line.

A water main is being refurbished and structural repairs to supports are being made. The carriageway will also be fully resurfaced between Heather Road and South Downs Road.

The road will remain closed between Heather Road and South Downs Road until towards the end of July. The exact completion date may depend upon weather changes.

Due to the nature of the work and safety requirements, no pedestrian access is possible during the closure period.

Most activity is taking place during the daytime between 7:30am and 5:30pm but some night-time working may be needed to fit in with railway requirements.

A spokesperson for Trafford Council said:

“We are working with partners to make sure that Ashley Road Railway Bridge continues to serve as an important and well-used travel route for many years to come. It was originally hoped the road would be ready to reopen towards the end of June but the work has taken longer than anticipated, meaning it will continue during July. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the road closure as we work to improve and reopen the bridge.”
