Validation requirements
Adopted Validation Checklist
Our adopted Validation Checklist sets out all the information that is required to be submitted with your planning application.
The Validation Checklist comprises a list of plans and documents, and it explains when each item is required and what information it should contain to ensure that all applications are supported by sufficient detailed information.
It is divided into two sections, which are the national requirements and the local requirements:
- The national requirements are set by Government and are consistent across all local planning authorities in England
- The local requirements (or ‘local validation requirements’) have been prepared by this Council and they have been tailored to reflect the circumstances that are relevant for this area.
The level of information required varies dependent on the nature and scale of the application.
If you intend to apply for planning permission or other consents, we recommend that you familiarise yourself with the Validation Checklist to ensure that your application contains all the information required. Consider the other forms and guidance provided, which may be relevant for your application.

Invalid applications
An invalid application is an application submitted to us that is missing information we require to process your application. On average, around 60% of planning applications submitted to us are invalid.
If an application is found to be invalid, we will contact you or your appointed agent with details of what information is still outstanding and how and when to submit this to us.
An invalid submission will delay your application. We won't be able to start considering your proposal until we have all the information we need.
Common reasons for invalid planning applications include:
- The fee has not been paid or the incorrect fee has been paid
- The Community Infrastructure Levy additional information form is missing or incorrect
- There is no scale bar on the plans
- The plans say ‘do not scale’
- The location plan does not show two road names
If we do not receive all of the requested, outstanding information within the stated timescale, your application will be withdrawn.
