Consultation

Temporary stopping facilities for gypsies and travellers

The use of Temporary Stopping Facilities can be helpful in ensuring that groups passing through an area have a safe place to stay with some basic facilities. They can also provide a genuine alternative to temporary stays in locations where conflict with other uses is more likely.

In a dense metropolitan area like Trafford, it can be difficult to find a suitable site that would be able to accommodate such a facility however, we would like to consult on the proposed use of an unused piece of road at Boyer Street in Old Trafford.

If this goes ahead, it will provide a temporary stopping place for groups who are travelling through and will include some toilets and some litter bins. View the proposed location.

Times of operation

If the following consultation of the site proceeds, it will be operational through the period 1 April – 31 October to account for the main travelling season.

Length of stay

It is envisaged that groups will stay a maximum of 2 or 3 weeks.

Frequency of use

It is intended that the site will be used intermittently as and when the need arises; it is not considered suitable for longer term or continuous use.

Meeting the cost of the facility

We will seek a fair contribution from those using the site towards the cost of facilities. We currently meet the cost of clean-ups from visits elsewhere to public land.

Review of the facility

We will review the operation of the site after the 2023 season. It is unlikely to be a suitable site in the long term as adjacent land undergoes development.

Have your say

We are keen to listen to what people have to say about the proposal, so we have opened a consultation which will run until Monday 6 March 2023 at 4pm. Complete the form below to provide any comments on the proposal.
