XL Bully ban

The XL Bully breed are going to added to the list of dog banned. You can find out more about the ban on GOV.UK.

From 31 December 2023 for XL Bully dogs it will be illegal to:

  • breed 
  • sell 
  • exchange 
  • advertise 
  • rehome
  • gift 
  • abandon
  • allow it to stray

These dogs must be muzzled and on a lead in public.

From 1 February 2024 it will be a criminal offence to own an XL Bully unless the owner has a Certificate of Exemption. Applications will open shortly. 

Licensed XL Bully breeders

You should now stop all breeding activity. From 31 December 2023 for XL Bully dogs it will be a criminal offence to:

  • sell
  • transfer
  • exchange 
  • advertise 
  • gift 
  • breed an XL Bully dog from any combination of other dogs

Puppies that were bred before this ban was introduced can be legally sold. Puppies must not be sold before they are 8 weeks old. 

Anyone who buys a puppy less than 8 weeks old before 31 December 2023 can legally collect the puppy when it is 8 weeks old. 

Report illegal breeding

From 31 December 2023, if you have concerns about illegal breeding of XL Bully breed types you can report these to the animal welfare team
