How to get involved in tackling climate change

As an individual

There is so much that individuals can do to help Trafford become low carbon and climate resilient. And in doing so, you can reap various benefits, including reduced energy bills, healthier and more active lifestyles and improved community cohesion.

Personal actions can reduce your footprint and encourage greater action on climate change. The Grantham Institute has a list of the top 9 things individuals can do.

You can challenge yourself with Ailuna, a sustainability engagement app which makes it fun to develop habits that are good for you and the planet. You can also think about your own footprint by using the WWF calculator.

Visit the Green Economy Marketplace to look for local suppliers of net zero products and services.

Travel

Walking or cycling short journeys is a great way to help the planet, Trafford, your health and your wallet, see our Walking, Wheeling and Cycling Strategy.

Upgrade your home

Make your home more energy efficient so it's easier to heat and runs on clean energy.

Climate resilience

  • Tips for how to stay cool in heatwaves
  • Check in on elderly and vulnerable neighbours during extreme weather such as flooding or heat waves
  • Try and keep greenspaces as this can improve rainwater run-off and prevent flooding
  • If you’re having work done on your house, ask your builder about possible modifications that can build resilience to extreme heat and weather events such as shutters and shading, or larger gutters to accommodate more run off.

As a business

Sign up to the Business Growth Hub’s Green Business Pledge. This is free to sign up to, and gives businesses some ideas of actions they can take to reduce their environmental impact and grow their business. Businesses who sign up will receive a certificate they can use to promote their green credentials.

If you have a small or medium-sized business in Greater Manchester, you may be eligible for an Energy Efficiency Grant of between £1,000 and £2,500 from the Business Growth Hub, to help with up to 50% of the costs of your energy efficiency improvements.

Set up a Cycle to Work Scheme and encourage your staff to travel sustainably whilst saving tax for themselves and your business.
