About the course:

If you’re looking to start a career in Teaching Support then our Skills Bootcamps are for you. Created with input from schools and supported by Greater Manchester Combined Authority, these flexible 16 week courses give people the opportunity to build up sector-specific skills and fast-track to an interview with an employer. This course is 100% online but you must attend regular scheduled live lessons as this is an intensive course where you’ll need to follow our tutors instructions to complete each module.

Week 1 & 2: Understanding The Role Of A Teaching Assistant 

  • The Role of a TA
  • The structure of education from early years to post-compulsory education
  • Roles and responsibilities in schools / Ethos, Mission, Aims and Values
  • Legislation affecting schools
  • Purpose of school policies and procedures
  • Wider context in which schools operate

Week 3 & 4:  Understanding Child & Young Person Development 

  • Expected pattern of development for children and young people from birth to 19 years
  • Understanding the factors that influence children and young people's development and how these affect practice
  • Understanding how to monitor children and young people's development and interventions that should take place if this is not following the expected pattern
  • Understanding the importance of early intervention to support the speech, language and communication needs of children and young people.
  • Understanding the potential effects of transitions on children and young people's development.
  • Understanding the term Special Educational Needs

Week 5 & 6: Safeguarding & Wellbeing 

  • Understanding the main legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures for safeguarding children and young people
  • Understanding the importance of working in partnership with other organisations to safeguard children and young people
  • Understanding the importance of ensuring children and young people’s safety and protection in the work setting
  • Understanding how to respond to evidence or concerns that a child or young person has been abused or harmed
  • Understanding how to respond to evidence or concerns that a child or young person has been bullied
  • Understanding how to work with children and young people to support their safety and wellbeing

Week 7:  Developing Professional Relationships With Children, Young People & Adults 

  • Understanding the principles of developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults
  • Understanding how to work collaboratively
  • Understanding legislation, policies and procedures for confidentiality and sharing information, including data protection

Week 8: Communicating With Children Confidently 

  • Understanding how to communicate with children and young people.
  • Sharing creative learning experiences
  • Supporting children's speech, language and communication

Week 9: Promoting ED & I In Work With Children & Young People 

  • Be able to promote equality and diversity in work with children and young people
  • Understanding the impact of prejudice and discrimination on children and young people
  • Be able to support inclusion and inclusive practices in work with children and young people

Week 10: Support Children & Young People's Health And Safety 

  • Understanding how to plan and provide environments and services that support children and young people’s health and safety.
  • Be able to recognise and manage risks to health, safety and security in a work setting or off site visits
  • Understanding how to support children and young people to assess and manage risk for themselves
  • Understanding appropriate responses to accidents, incidents emergencies and illness in work settings and off site visits.

Week 11: Engaging In Personal Development In Children's And Young People's Settings 

  • Understanding what is required for competence in own work role
  • Be able to reflect on practice
  • Be able to evaluate own performance (Gibbs Reflective cycle)
  • Be able to use learning opportunities

Week 12: Learning Through Play 

  • Understanding the importance of creativity and imagination for the development of a child
  • Understanding the role of creative activities in enhancing children’s learning and development.
  • Understanding the importance of talking and listening activities in relation to children’s learning and development.

Week 13 & 14: Understanding Special Educational Needs (Including Autism)

  • Introduction to SEN
  • Autism in Context
  • Theories and History and representation of Autism
  • Interventions and support available for autistic individuals
  • Safeguarding in autism

Week 15: Understanding Behavioural Support 

  • Understanding policies and procedures for promoting children and young people’s positive behaviour
  • Be able to promote positive behaviour
  • Be able to respond to challenging behaviour

Week 16: Support Assessment And Learning Activities 

  • Understanding the purpose and characteristics of assessment for learning
  • Be able to use assessment strategies to promote learning
  • Be able to support learners in reviewing their learning strategies and achievements
  • Be able to contribute to reviewing assessment for learning

Courses start every two weeks. Contact course provider for next course start date. 

Eligibility criteria:

  • 19+
  • Open to those who are unemployed, employed or self-employed.
  • Live or work in Greater Manchester
  • Right to work in the UK
  • An adult must generally only undertake one skills bootcamp per funding year
