About the course:

The NCFE qualification is designed to increase learners’ knowledge and understanding of mental health well-being. Successful completion of the required units will allow the learner to develop in-depth knowledge and understanding of metal health. It will also support progression into relevant employment within the Health and Social Care sector.

This qualification will:

  • Focus on the study of mental health and mental well-being to support different occupational areas
  • Offer breath and depth study, incorporating key core of knowledge and understanding.

The objectives of this qualification are to help learner to understand:

  • Mental health legislation, services and public attitudes and how these have evolved
  • How to support mental health through various stages of life
  • Mental ill-health, treatment options available and potential consequences of mental ill-health  The skills required to work in a mental health service.

To be awarded the qualification, learners are required to successfully complete 5 mandatory units:

  • Unit 1: Understand the context of mental health and wellbeing
  • Unit 2: Promotion of mental health and wellbeing
  • Unit 3: Mental health problems: associated issues and consequences
  • Unit 4: Understand mental ill health
  • Unit 5: Working in mental health

This qualification is internally assessed and externally quality assured. Level 3 criteria can require learners to analyse, draw conclusions, interpret or justify, which are all examples of higher level skills. This means that evidence provided for the portfolio will also demonstrate the development and use of higher level learning skills. This qualification aims to provide learners with a number of progression options, including higher level studies at university or FE colleges. Level 3 qualifications enable the development of these skills: checking and testing information supporting your points with evidence, self-directed study, self-motivation thinking for yourself , analysing and synthesising information/materials, critical thinking and problem solving, working collaboratively, reflecting upon learning and identifying improvements.

Successful learners could progress to other qualifications such as:

  • L3 Award in Awareness of Mental Health Capacity Act 2005
  • L3 Diploma in Adult Social Care
  • L3 Certificate in Preparing to work in Adult Social Care

Eligibility criteria:

  • Aged 19+Living within GMCA postcode
  • Having resided in the UK for more than 3 years, and able to access Public Funds
  • Learners without a full Level 3 qualification OR Learners that hold a full Level 3 qualification or higher and earn below £23,104
  • Must not currently be in receipt of government funding for another qualification
