What are Skills Bootcamps?

The Growth Company has been awarded funding by Greater Manchester Combined Authority to deliver bespoke Skills Bootcamps in the city-region, which form part of the UK Government Lifetime Skills Guarantee and Skills for Life with the Department for Education (DfE) helping everyone gain skills for life.

Skills Bootcamps give people aged 19+ the opportunity to build up sector specific skills through fully-funded and co-funded flexible courses of up to 16 weeks. After completing the training, participants will fast track to a guaranteed interview with a local employer.

Course details:

This 12-week Skills Bootcamp is designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge required to start your career in software development.

On successful completion of this Skills Bootcamp, you will have learnt essential knowledge that can’t be found in a textbook – like problem-solving, communication skills and working in a team, as well as the key technical and commercial skills you need to land a great career in tech.

Week 1: Coding Fundamentals with Javascript

Week 2: Introduction to Front-End Web (HTML/CSS)

Week 3: JS DOM and Front-End projects

Week 4: Intermediate JavaScript

Week 5: React.js Fundamentals

Week 6: React.js Intermediate

Week 7: Node.js Fundamentals - Introduction to Back End

Week 8: Web Servers & REST APIs; Employability Session

Week 9: MySQL

Week 10: Full stack web (including deployment)

Week 11 & 12: Employer Project 

Employability skills are embedded throughout the Skills Bootcamp to help prepare you for an interview.

During the 12-week Skills Bootcamp, we will also cover:

  • Working in an agile environment
  • Mastering Kanban, timesheets and Trello
  • Lifecycle of a technical project
  • Development/technical responsibilities to project managers/client-services 
  • How to work with project managers/tests 
  • How to approach problem-solving in tech

Skills Bootcamp 2 – 9 January 2023 

Eligibility criteria: 

Our Skills Bootcamps are fully funded for anyone aged 19+ who is:

  • Employed either full-time or part-time
  • Unemployed
  • Self-employed
  • A serving prisoner due to be released within 6 months of completion of a Skills Bootcamp and those on temporary release
