Council to play leading role in UK's biggest mass-action environmental campaign

Trafford Council is playing a leading role in this year’s Great British Spring Clean – a mass-action environmental campaign to clean up local areas.

The campaign, which runs from March 22nd to April 23rd, is organised by Keep Britain Tidy and will see up to half a million people taking action to remove litter from streets and parks across the country.

Trafford Council has launched a local campaign – Are You Ready? - encouraging schools, community groups and residents to get involved in their own clean ups and litter picks. It was launched by Trafford Council leader Cllr Andrew Western at Seymour Park Primary School in Old Trafford.

Trafford Council has organised a number of litter picking events across the borough and the public are welcome to join in.   For the full list, please go to the Keep Britain Tidy website.

Cllr Stephen Adshead, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Environment, Air Quality and Climate Change, said:

We are delighted to be supporting this year’s Great British Spring Clean campaign. We are calling on as many residents, community groups and schools as possible to get involved.

We have organised several litter picks across the borough so everyone can get involved and we are urging others to set up their own litter picks during this time. The council will support anyone wanting to set up a Great British Spring Clean event and anyone interested in finding out more are asked to e-mail GBSC@trafford.gov.uk This is all about improving Trafford and making it even cleaner and greener. Some people think that dropping litter is still acceptable and we are out to show that is absolutely not the case.  Please get involved in this fantastic campaign and help improve your area.”

Keep Britain Tidy Chief Executive Allison Ogden-Newton said:

The Great British Spring Clean is an opportunity for the millions of people who care about the environment on their doorstep to do something positive that will make a visible difference. We are delighted that Trafford Council is supporting this year’s campaign and would like to thank them for their support.

Without councils across the country giving the campaign their backing, our volunteers would not be able to do the incredible job they do.”

This year’s campaign will not only see tonnes of litter being removed from the environment on our doorstep, it also aims to rescue thousands of the plastic bottles and aluminium drinks cans that are simply thrown on the ground but could, very easily, be recycled.
