Trafford digital roadshow to inspire female students hailed a success

A Roadshow designed to inspire more of Trafford’s female students to take up careers in the digital world has been hailed a success.

The event was attended by pupils from several schools across the borough and organised by Trafford Council and Manchester Digital, in a bid to encourage more girls to take up careers in tech.

It was held at Altrincham Mercure Bowdon Hotel and guests included a speaker from the Government’s secret listening centre GCHQ, who joined other female role models from organisations as diverse as Microsoft, Dell, UA92, Barclays, Autotrader and Bruntwood to talk about their work.

The Roadshow was opened by Councillor Andrew Western, Leader of Trafford Council and DIGITAL Skills lead for Greater Manchester.

Cllr Western said:

It was so pleasing to see so many schools express an interest in this event, which has proved so popular there’s another one planned for later in the year. Girls are still under represented in the digital industry which is a real pity, as the opportunities are as numerous as they are varied. Events like this are sure to inspire more young women to take them up.”

Emma Grant, Talent and Skills Manager at Manchester Digital, added:

Manchester Digital is delighted to have teamed up with Trafford Council and Mercure Altrincham Bowdon Hotel to bring its Digital Her Inspire Roadshow to Trafford. With support from local schools, businesses and councils, we can help create confident and curious young women who want to work in or with tech, and enable those around them to help them make  informed decisions about their future. That’s incredibly powerful.”
The event received top marks from teachers who attended, with comments ranging from it being dubbed a “fantastic opportunity to open the minds of young women to future possibilities” to “Today was an eye opener for the students – it’s not all about coding.”
