Council to consult with residents over upgrade to junction plans

Trafford Council is to consult with residents over plans to upgrade a busy junction to improve the safety of pedestrians and cyclists.

The Council is working with partner Amey at One Trafford Partnership to improve walking and cycling facilities at the Talbot Road and White City Way junction in Old Trafford.

Proposals for the junction include the replacement of uncontrolled crossing points and the installation of new protected cycle routes with links to existing ones. There are also plans for new footways and islands across the junction.

The objective of these upgrades is to provide a safer and more user-friendly experience for residents to walk and cycle along Talbot Road. The route is well used by commuters and students, and links in with ambitions of the Council to provide a quality corridor to access work, education and leisure facilities in and around the area.

In support of this ambition, the Mayor of Greater Manchester allocated £160 million to the Mayor’s Cycling and Walking Challenge Fund (MCF) to develop walking and cycling infrastructure across the region, which the team at One Trafford Partnership were successful in securing funding for seven schemes, totalling circa £40m through a bidding process. The schemes have been prioritised for delivery, which includes these proposals for the Talbot Road junction with White City Way.

Executive Member for Environmental and Regulatory Services at Trafford Council, Cllr Stephen Adshead, said:

“The proposed upgrades to the junction at Talbot Road and White City Way will allow pedestrians and cyclist to feel safe and confident navigating the junction, which is what the local community deserves. If people want to walk and cycle in their local area they should be able to do so safely.”

The consultation commenced the week beginning 14th February 2022. Postcards containing further information will be delivered to residents, who can have their say by visiting the Consultation Hub by 13 March 2022. For more information on the scheme visit the webpage.
