Warm welcome for Ukrainian families in Trafford

Ukrainian families are beginning to arrive in Trafford after fleeing the war-torn country to start a new life in the borough – and they’re being guaranteed a warm welcome!

Around 100 Trafford residents have been matched as ‘sponsors’ and have signed up to the Government’s Homes for Ukraine scheme to temporarily host families fleeing the country.

Trafford Council and its partners from the community and voluntary sectors are welcoming the refugees with open arms and are working closely together to support them as they arrive.

The Council – along with its partners – is spearheading a strategic support plan for the refugees which includes carrying out accommodation suitability and safeguarding checks through DBS checks, administering Government-funded payments to sponsors, arranging school places for children and referring individuals to services and support including health, benefits and job seeking. There is also the offer of English courses for Ukrainian adults through the ESOL scheme.

Hundreds of volunteers are also working hard behind the scenes through the Trafford community hub scheme to provide refugees with everything they need on arrival. Each family will also receive a special welcome hamper which contains food and gifts as well as information about access to health care, transport and benefits.

Millions of Ukrainians have been forced to leave the Ukraine in search of safe havens after the Russian invasion and bombardment of their country. They are being resettled across Europe after being made homeless due to the war.

A spokesperson for Trafford Council said: “Trafford Council and all our partners across the borough and GM are united in wanting to do all that we can to welcome refugees and support all those who have volunteered to offer them a temporary home. We will continue to do everything we possibly can to ensure that Ukrainians arriving in Trafford can settle in swiftly and safely with all the support they need.

“Thank you to all the generous residents who have helped in providing a safe haven for all those fleeing the conflict and to those working tirelessly behind the scenes in our communities.”

Donations are still required to help fund the support packages for the Ukrainian families. To help, please go to  Ukrainian Response | Trafford hubs .

Anyone wishing to become a sponsor for a Ukrainian family fleeing the war should register via the Government's Homes for Ukraine page rather than contact Trafford Council.  We are receiving information from Government on sponsors in Trafford who have registered and we will then contact you directly. There is also a page on our website for those wanting more information.

The Department for Work and Pensions also has some useful advice regarding help and support on its website.
