Major new planning policy document approved by Council

A major planning policy document which will guide the regeneration and development of a large area of Old Trafford and Gorse Hill has been approved by the Council.

Full Council met last and agreed to adopt the Civic Quarter Area Action plan (CQAAP).

The CQAAP covers 55 hectares including Trafford Town Hall, Trafford College, UA92, Lancashire Cricket Club, the former B&Q site on Great Stone Road in Stretford and the former Greater Manchester Police Chester House HQ site.

The long-term plan for the area includes new homes and offices, better leisure facilities, new public realm including a processional route between Lancashire Cricket Club and Manchester United, and improved cycle and pedestrian connections.

The plan been the subject of several rounds of public consultation and was examined by an independent planning inspector in a series of public meetings held at Trafford Town Hall in April 2022.

Following its adoption, the CQAAP is now part of the statutory development plan and will be used to determine planning applications in the Civic Quarter area.

Cllr Liz Patel, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Economy and Regeneration, said she was happy with the decision of Full Council . Cllr Patel said: “Securing the successful regeneration of this location as a place to live, visit and do business has been a longstanding priority for Trafford Council. The Plan is extremely important in helping shape the future development of the area and could deliver high quality new homes, leisure facilities and improved streets in this area.

“It supports a number of Trafford Council’s priorities including the building of new and affordable homes, supporting people out of poverty and reducing heath inequalities.”
