Foster carers recognised for making a difference

Two Trafford foster carers have been shortlisted for a BBC Radio carer award in recognition of the dedication and love they have shown in welcoming children and young people into their home over many years.

The Make a Difference awards give local communities a chance to say ‘thank you’ and show appreciation for people who go out of their way to make life better for others.

Reaching the final of the BBC Radio Manchester Awards came as a complete surprise to Trafford foster carers Paula and Roman Romanowski, who have been foster carers for over 25 years and still have no idea who nominated them. They are now looking forward to the awards ceremony, which will take place in the autumn.

Paula said:

“It was so unexpected to be nominated but we’re really thrilled and excited to be attending the ceremony and being part of the event.

“Fostering has been a rewarding experience for us. It’s been a privilege to meet and care for children and young people who face many challenges but who are determined to get the best out of life – they’re an inspiration to us.”

Roman added:

“Fostering is the best thing we’ve ever done and if anything I wish we’d started even earlier. I’d recommend it to anyone. We’re heading towards retirement now, but plan to carry on for a few more years first as we still enjoy it so much, even after all this time.”

Cllr Karina Carter, Trafford’s lead member for Children’s Services, said:

“Paula and Roman are truly amazing people and a real inspiration. Over many years they have offered respite care to numerous children with complex needs with such love and commitment.

“Even after children have left Paula and Roman’s care they often remain in touch, building very special relationships with both the children and their parents and carers.

“They are hugely deserving of this recognition and we really hope they win the award!”

Paula and Roman’s achievement comes at an apt time as Trafford, alongside Greater Manchester’s nine other local authorities, launches a new campaign, Fostering Unfiltered, which explores the day-to-day realities of fostering and gives current and potential foster carers the chance to connect and share experiences.
