Council's commitment to active travel outlined in report

Trafford Council’s commitment to providing safe and accessible active travel schemes across the borough will be outlined in a report to councillors on Monday (July 24).

The report to the Executive provides an update on Trafford’s Active Travel schemes to date and expresses the Council’s focus on the delivery of priority schemes subject to securing funding from Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) Mayors Challenge Fund (MCF) programme.

The report follows on the recently approved Trafford Council’s Walking, Wheeling and Cycling Strategy as well as the successful delivery of A56 Phase 1 A5014 Chester Road scheme, implemented in April 2023, and previously with the Longford Park active neighbourhood in 2021.

Trafford Council is concentrating its delivery efforts and resources along the A56 and in the Urmston Active Neighbourhood. The focus on the A56 supports the development of a strategic North Active Travel Corridor, a route spanning from the M60 Junction 7, through Stretford, along the A56 to Talbot Road and A56 Old Chester Road to the Cornbrook Junction and into Manchester.

This route is well used by commuters and students, and links in with the ambitions of the Council to provide a quality corridor to access places of work, education and leisure facilities, and key public transport points.

There are three priority schemes along this North Active Travel Corridor, specifically, a scheme made up of three junctions along Talbot Road (junctions of Chester Road, Great Stone Road and White City Way, which subject to finalising and agreeing the programme with appointed contractor, the works are forecast to begin in August 2023.

The next priority are the junctions at Seymour Grove; Talbot Road; Chester Rd and Boyer Street, a scheme which recently completed public consultation. Finally, the improvements to walking and cycling facilities along the A56 Chester Road to Talbot Road where the proposal is to keep the existing layout of the temporary cycle scheme on A56 Chester Road incorporating an improved layout boosting cyclist and pedestrian safety.

Cllr Aidan Williams, Trafford Council’s Executive Member for Climate Change, said: “Trafford Council is totally committed to active travel and making the roads safer for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians alike. We are proud of the work we are carrying out and will continue to promote this type of environmentally-friendly travel throughout the borough.”
