Don't use pyrotechnics, protesting United fans are urged

Manchester United fans protesting before games at Old Trafford have been reminded not to use pyrotechnics.

Last season saw supporters take to the streets on several occasions, calling for the club to be sold. However, some of the protests involved a significant use of pyrotechnics such as flares, which resulted in injury to members of the public, people working at the stadium and police officers.

Ahead of the new football season starting, Trafford Safety Advisory Group has called on protesters to consider the impact they may have on other supporters who are attending matches at the stadium.

Trafford Safety Advisory Group members include Trafford Council, Greater Manchester Polices , North West Ambulance Service and Greater Manchester Fire Rescue Service, who have a role in advising on matters of safety at the stadium.

A spokesperson said:

"The use of pyrotechnics within the footprint of the stadium is banned and in breach of safety regulations, meaning those responsible may receive a stadium ban and be reported to the police.

“Fans have the right to protest, and we support that right. However, we would ask that protesters are considerate in their behaviour and don’t do anything that is illegal or could harm fellow supporters.

“Don't let a moment of poor judgement lead to criminal prosecution or a match ban.”

Manchester United’s season kicks off on Monday 14 August at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers (ko 8pm).
