Exciting multi-million pound plans to transform Stretford town centre have reached an important milestone.
Trafford Council has started work to demolish the vacant probation centre on Lacy Street to make way for homes.
The new homes, including affordable homes, are part of the overall masterplan for Stretford town centre, are planned to be built on the probation centre site, the adjoining car park and the former post office site.
Lacy Street is a prominent gateway into the town centre which faces onto Bridgewater Canal and other proposals for the site will seek to improve access to the canal-side, provide improved public realm and support new residential and commercial development.
The overall masterplan, which has received outline planning approval, will see the building of up to 800 homes around Stretford Mall, St Matthews Church and Lacy Street. With both sustainability and the high street at the heart of the masterplan, the plans centre around creating people-friendly spaces and new pedestrian routes into and around the town centre, to enhance the flow of footfall around the area.
More green meeting areas are planned with public squares and open spaces, including a green biodiversity corridor and ‘Central Park’ at the heart of the town centre through to a much improved Bridgewater Canal waterside experience. Work also is continuing with our partners Bruntwood to update and regenerate nearby Stretford Mall and our public realm works to make the Kingsway and Barton Road junction safer and greener are up and running.
Cllr Tom Ross Leader of Trafford Council, was invited to witness the start of the work to demolish the probation centre. He said: “This is a very important milestone in the transformation of Stretford town centre. New homes will be built on the Lacy Street site as part of the overall masterplan for Stretford and they include affordable homes.
“I am extremely excited by the future of this development and the proposals to build news and open up the canal. Trafford Council is totally committed to the regeneration and redevelopment of our town centres and Stretford is no exception.”
