Highway improvement programme for 2023-24

The full list of schemes on the highway improvement programme for 2023-24 are below.

Each scheme will be given a forecasted start date. However, road improvements are subject to:

Changes in weather
Existing underground utilities
Upcoming events

This means expected start dates or the duration of a scheme may be delayed.

If your road is to be resurfaced

If you live on a road which is to be resurfaced, we will contact you via a letter. The letter will be delivered to you approximately one to two weeks before the expected start date of the works. The letter will include details such as:

When the works will be taking place
The sections of the road to be surface (e.g. from one junction to another or the entire road)
If the works will be carried out in the daytime or night-time
The times in which the road will be closed
Parking arrangement (e.g. no parking or restricted parking)
Bin collection arrangements
Contact details should you have any further enquiries

We will also place signs on the road to tell you when the works are planned. Closer to the time of the works, we will place cones to ensure we have full access to the road surface.

What to do while works are taking place on your road

While your road is being resurfaced, we aim to keep access to your road and property maintained where possible.

Please ensure all cars are off the road when we commence works. Arrangements can be made to deal with traffic movement only if it’s safe, practical and we are forewarned. However, this will depend on the extent of the works and the size of your road. A traffic marshal maybe on be on-site during operational hours to assist with matters. They will be able to answer your questions and assist you with access to your property.

What we do when resurfacing

When a road is on the list, it means it has been identified by our highway officers and engineers for improvements work.

There are a number of different methods used to resurface a road. These methods depend on the road itself and its current condition. These methods include:

Resurfacing - this consists of planing the existing surface off up to 50mm in depth, followed by a new surface layer to seal the road and/or footway from water ingress
Reconstruction – this involves replacing the road and / or footway to depths over 50mm, to re-establish structural integrity and ensure that water ingress is prevented
Preventative surface treatment methods, such as ‘micro-asphalt’ or surface dressing – this is a fine layer of asphalt sprayed onto the existing surface, with additives and small chippings. Whilst this treatment will not change carriageway levels or improve ride quality in the same manners as resurfacing or reconstruction, the layer will seal the surface from water ingress, which is a root source of potholes
