Street works and permits

It is a requirement of the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 that undertakers notify the Highway Authority of any works the adopted highway.

We operate a licencing regime to minimise disruption to road users and pedestrians, and to ensure that the works that take place are safe.

Section 50 Licence

A Section 50 Streetworks Licence is required if works are in relation to new or existing apparatus. Apparatus includes, but is not limited to:

  • Private drainage infrastructure
  • Broadband or telecommunications infrastructure
  • Utilities infrastructure (EG: water or gas pipes)

You will need to complete and submit a Section 50 Licence request form at least five days before you plan to commence work.

Section 171 Licence

A company or individual wanting to deposit materials on, occupy or make a temporary small excavation in, the highway require a Section 171 licence.

You will need to complete and submit a Section 171 Licence request form at least five days before you plan to commence work.
