What goes in your green bin

Part of: Food and garden waste

You can put both food waste and garden waste in your green bin. We will only collect your garden waste if you have subscribed to our garden waste collection service.

Food waste

  • Raw, cooked, and gone-off meat and fish (including bones)
  • Raw, cooked, and gone-off fruit and vegetables
  • Leftovers from your plate
  • Rice, pasta, beans
  • Bread, cake, and pastries
  • Cheese and eggs (including eggshells)
  • Tea bags and coffee grounds

You can also put cut flowers, house plants, and pet bedding in your green bin; these are not considered garden waste. Pet bedding does not include cat litter or dog poo, which you should put in your grey bin.

Garden waste

  • Flowers and plants
  • Leaves from the garden
  • Grass cuttings and hedge clippings
  • Twigs and small branches

If you have not subscribed to our garden waste collection service, we will not empty your green bin if it contains any garden waste.

What we won't empty

  • Liquids (milk, cooking oils, etc.)
  • Plastic bags
  • Plastic food packaging
  • Glass
  • Rubble
  • Turf and ash
  • Soil and stone
  • Dog and cat poo

Bags of waste presented to the side of the bin will not be collected. If you have extra waste or recycling, you can take this to your local household waste recycling centre for free. Find your nearest recycling centre.
