Street lighting

Part of: Street lighting, road signs, street furniture

We are responsible for the installation and maintenance of street lighting on the adopted highway, and on Council maintained parks and car parks in Trafford.

Currently, Trafford has over 27,000 street lights. We are not responsible for the maintenance of street lighting on private streets or developments.

Maintenance

Our street lighting team undertake a programme of cyclical maintenance on street lighting columns and lanterns. This includes testing for both electrical and structural faults to ensure that they are safe.

There may be times where such testing identifies a street lighting column that needs to be immediately removed for safety reasons. There may be a delay between the removal of a column and its replacement.

There may also be occasions when, after consulting existing codes of practice and standards, that a replacement street light is not required.

For specific information regarding the provision of street lighting in Conservation Areas, read our Street Lighting in Conservation Areas policy.
