Shared lives scheme

Part of: Housing and healthcare options

Shared lives is a scheme where an adult who needs support lives with (or regularly spends time with) a carefully chosen carer and their family.

The carer provides support in an ordinary home environment, helping you to be part of everyday community life. They can support you with daily routines while making sure you keep your independence and choice. Read more about shared lives schemes.

Support you may get:

  • Help with daily living (cooking, shopping, budgeting)
  • Support to take part in community activities
  • Encouragement to build confidence and skills
  • Personal care, if needed, as part of everyday life in the household

Who shared lives is for

Shared lives is usually for adults who:

  • Have a learning disability or autism and want a homely environment rather than residential care
  • Live with mental health needs and would benefit from family-style support
  • Are recovering from an acquired brain injury and need a safe and stable place to live
  • May feel isolated and would benefit from living in a family setting

Access support from the shared lives scheme

You should first contact your social worker to ask whether you might be eligible.

You then need to request an Adult Social Care assessment, under 'request support.'

After an initial assessment, the shared lives scheme will match you with a carer. There will then be introductions, agreements, and regular reviews.
