Sheltered housing

Part of: Housing and healthcare options

Sheltered housing is a group of self-contained flats or bungalows with some shared facilities, including:

  • Communal lounges or gardens
  • Organised social activities
  • Occasional staff visits or on-site support
  • 24-hour emergency call systems
  • On-site wardens during business hours

Who sheltered housing is for

If you are mostly independent but would like extra safety, security, and a supportive community, sheltered housing could be right for you.

Typical residents include:

  • Older adults (normally 55+, though age can vary by scheme)
  • People who can live independently but want reassurance of support nearby
  • Adults who may feel isolated and would benefit from community living
  • People not yet ready for a care home but want more security than living alone

Access sheltered housing in Trafford

Many sheltered housing complexes are managed by housing associations. To apply, you need to register with Trafford’s housing system.

Some sheltered housing schemes also allow you to rent privately or buy a flat on a leasehold basis. You can approach these providers directly without going through the Council.
