Supported living

Part of: Housing and healthcare options

Supported living means you have your own home or flat, or sometimes share with others. You hold your own tenancy, so it’s your home, not a care home.

Care and support staff visit or are based nearby to help you when you need it. The support is flexible and tailored to you. It could be just a few hours a week, or daily support, depending on what you need. Read more about supported living.

Support you may get:

  • Help with personal care (if needed)
  • Assistance with managing money, shopping, and cooking
  • Support with accessing community services, education, and social life

Who supported living is for

Typical residents include adults who:

  • Have a learning disability or autism and want to live independently with support
  • Live with mental health needs and need help to manage daily routines
  • Have a physical disability and need support with mobility or personal care
  • Are recovering from an acquired brain injury and need a safe, supported place to live

You may have a tenancy that includes rent and service charges. You may also need to pay a contribution to support costs.

If you’re eligible for Adult Social Care support, you should ask for a review of your housing needs. A social worker or housing team may then propose a supported living placement.
