Modern slavery can take many forms in the UK. It often involves exploitation and may be linked to other types of abuse or crime.
Examples of modern slavery include:
- Trafficking – moving a person to exploit them
- Domestic slavery or forced labour – for example, in construction, farming, shops, bars, nail bars, car washes or manufacturing
- County lines – when people are exploited to move or sell drugs across areas
- Gangs – using threats, violence, or control to exploit people
- Cuckooing – when criminals take over someone’s home, often to sell drugs
