Charitable and discretionary relief

Part of: Business rates reductions and reliefs

If you’re a registered charity or non-profit organisation, you may be able to get money off your business rates bill.

Charitable rate relief

Registered charities can get 80 percent off their business rates bill.

You can get this relief if the property is used wholly or mainly for charitable purposes.

From April 2025, charitable relief will not apply to private schools.

Discretionary relief

We can decide to give relief on all or part of the bill for properties used by certain non profit making organisations.

We can also consider giving relief where:

  • a business is experiencing hardship
  • part of a property cannot be used for a period of time

Discretionary relief is awarded in line with our Discretionary Relief Policy.
