Adapting to climate change

Part of: Our commitment to climate change

Trafford will continue to experience more flooding, heatwaves, and extreme weather, even as emissions are reduced. Work is underway locally and across Greater Manchester to build resilience.

Why adaptation is needed

Climate impacts are already being felt across the UK and in Trafford. Some further warming is already built into the climate system, so preparation is essential.

Local impacts from climate change could include more frequent flooding, longer and hotter heatwaves, and an increased risk of wildfires. There could also be a disruption to infrastructure and vital services.

What we are doing

  • We've worked with the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and other local partners to prepare the Greater Manchester Climate Change Risk Assessment, detailing how the region's climate might change in future years.
  • Trafford and Greater Manchester (GM) partners are currently developing a GM Adaptation Strategy and Action Plan.
  • Climate change adaptation and resilience are one of the eight aims in the refreshed GM Five-Year Environment Plan, which sets out actions partners across Greater Manchester will take to build resilience to our changing climate.
