Worthington Park

This park has previously been awarded the Green Flag award.

Green Flag award
In 1897 the Sale Urban District Council wanted to buy land to provide a public park in Sale. Sadly, the ratepayers refused to sanction the necessary expenditure. However, the day was saved when an anonymous donor, later revealed to be Mrs. Mary Worthington of Sale Old Hall, provided the funds. The 16.5 acre site was laid out by local architect Mr. McBeath. The park was opened by Mrs. Worthington on 30 June 1900. She planted a Red Oak tree which is still standing today. The park has changed over the years but still retains many of its original features. For many years, the park has retained the prestigious Green Flag award, the latest awarded in 2018.

Items of interest

The park has many original features including the bandstand, a bronze bust of Dr J. P. Joule (1818 - 1889, the famous local physicist who lived nearby on Wardle Road), and attractive entrance feature gates.

In 1903 Mrs. Scrimshaw donated a stone lion to the park. Generations of Sale children have sat on his back but finally he had to be retired to Sale Library.

Friends group

The Friends of Worthington Park work with Trafford Council, the local community and other stakeholders to maintain and improve the park. The Friends Group were instrumental in getting funding for the popular open air green gym and, more recently, have commissioned local ceramicist Gordon Cooke to design and install a plaque to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of famous scientist, and Sale resident, James Prescott Joule.

Volunteers from the group have replanted some of the beds in the park. The Friends Group also organise and sponsor various events in the park, including, brass band concerts in the summer and carol singing at Christmas time.
