Views sought over temporary stopping facility for travelling community

Residents are being asked their views on plans for a ‘temporary stopping facility’ for the travelling community.

Trafford Council is looking into the idea of opening such a facility on an underused road near Boyer Street in Old Trafford and would like to know what residents think of the proposal.

The temporary site, if approved, would be used to give Gypsy, traveller and Roma groups a safe place to stay with toilet and refuse facilities when they are passing through the borough. The facilities are used in other areas to provide an alternative to temporary stays in neighbourhood locations where conflict with other activities is more likely.

The use of temporary stopping facilities has been employed successfully elsewhere and the Council wants to trial its use in Trafford. The Council is consulting on using an area of quiet under-used highway for this purpose over the summer of 2023. If the plan goes ahead, the Council will review it after the first season.

A spokesperson for Trafford Council said: “We want to work for the benefit of everyone in our community. Providing better facilities for those passing through Trafford could avoid possible interruption to the use of facilities like parks and playing fields. We would like as many residents as possible to give their views on this consultation.”
