Apply for a new official address
You should apply when you receive planning permission or an appropriate building regulations decision and preferably before starting any building work.
You should definitely apply before any new build or conversion is substantially complete. Utility companies will not install services without an official address and postcode.
What you need to apply
You will need to provide:
- your contact name and details
- location and type of development
- official marketing name of the development
- planning permission / building control approval number
- suggested new street names when relevant (see our Street Naming and Numbering Guide for details)
- estimated date of occupation / completion
- plans clearly showing plot numbers, location in relation to existing land and property, and the placement of front doors or primary access on each plot
- internal layout plans, if appropriate, for development that is subdivided at unit or floor level
- details of postal delivery points for flats or apartments
We may ask for additional information when necessary to process a request.

Next steps
A Street Naming and Numbering plan will be created and sent to Royal Mail.
Royal Mail usually take 5 to 10 working days to confirm the postcodes at which point you will be sent a copy of the plan and the official addresses.
It usually takes 48 hours before a new address or address change appears on Royal Mail’s website. If the property is a new build it may have been added to their “not yet built” file.
To make an address live in Royal Mail’s Postal Address File, contact their address management centre on 08456 045060.
Information for developers
If you are a developer we would ask you to inform your prospective purchasers of their new property address.
If the new development includes the creation of new street(s) the Ward Councillors for the area will be consulted on the proposed street name.
You will be asked to provide new street name plates as detailed in our Street Naming and Numbering Guide.
