Carer's rights

Carers are legally entitled to protection, support, and recognition.

Your rights as a carer include:

  • The right to a Carer’s Assessment (if eligible)
  • Needs Assessment for the person you care for, accessed through a request for social care support
  • Access to local information and advice, even if you self-fund or haven’t had a formal assessment
  • Certain health rights
  • Employment rights, including flexible working and unpaid emergency leave
  • Access to support services, including financial help, respite care and training to support your role
  • Protection against discrimination or harassment because of caring responsibilities 

Where to get help with carers' rights

Carers UK

Carers UK offers free confidential advice on your rights as a carer. They also publish self-advocacy guides for carers.

Carers Trust

Carers Trust has information to help unpaid carers receive the support they are entitled to, including support for working carers.

Acas

Acas provides free employment advice, including help with workplace discrimination.

Trafford Carers Centre

Trafford Carers Centre provides support services, information, and advocacy for carers.
