Young carers

Part of: Support for carers

Young carers and young adult carers can miss out on childhood experiences or social activities because of caring responsibilities.

Trafford knows this can make life harder, which is why support is available.

Definition of a young carer

A young carer is someone under 16 who helps look after a family member or friend who can’t manage without their support. Young carers face challenges with balancing schoolwork and caring responsibilities, as well as tiredness, stress, and worry about family members.

Young Carer’s Assessment

Young carers are legally entitled to a young carer’s needs assessment to help them get extra support.

Anyone can make a referral for a young person. If the person being referred is under 14, you need to confirm that the parent or guardian of the carer gives their consent for the referral.
