Instalments and enforcement

Part of: Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL)

Instalment policy

If your total charge is £25,000 or more, you can pay in instalments. See the CIL Instalment Policy (PDF) for more information.

You must submit a Commencement Notice on time to qualify. If a Commencement Notice is not received before work starts, the full CIL charge becomes payable immediately.

If you don’t pay

CIL payment is mandatory for liable developments and cannot be negotiated.

There are strong enforcement powers and penalties for failing to pay, including Stop Notices, surcharges, late payment interest, and even prison terms.

You can appeal against certain aspects of the CIL charge. For more information on how to appeal see the Appeals page
