Chaperones

Part of: Child employment and entertainment

Children in licensed performances must be supervised by an approved chaperone unless their parent or an approved tutor is present.

Chaperones can only be approved by the local authority where they live.

Who can apply

  • You must be at least 18 years old
  • You must provide details of 2 referees

How to apply

Understanding the DBS check

  • Apply using your application reference number to link the DBS to your licence application
  • You can use an existing DBS if it was issued in the last 3 months
  • If your DBS is older than 3 months, you must apply for a new one
  • We cannot process your licence until the DBS is complete and linked

When to apply

  • Apply at least 8 to 12 weeks before you need the licence.

Responsibilities of a chaperone

Chaperones act in place of a parent. Your first duty is always to the child.

You are responsible for:

  • the child’s health, comfort and well-being
  • keeping records of rehearsals, performances, health needs and concerns
  • making sure the child has breaks, meals and recreation
  • protecting the child from stress, strain, bad weather or unsafe conditions

One chaperone can supervise up to 12 children. Trafford recommends 2 chaperones for that number.

What happens after you apply

  • We review your application and references
  • We confirm your DBS check is valid and linked
  • You may be invited to an interview
  • If successful, we issue your licence by post
  • The licence will state how long it is valid and when you must renew
