Hours and conditions

There are limits on when and how long children can work.

3 and 14 year olds

• Up to 2 hours on school days
• Up to 5 hours on Saturdays
• Up to 2 hours on Sundays
• Up to 12 hours per week in term time
• Up to 25 hours per week in school holidays, no more than 5 hours a day

15 and 16 year olds

• Up to 2 hours on school days
• Up to 8 hours on Saturdays
• Up to 2 hours on Sundays
• Up to 12 hours per week in term time
• Up to 35 hours per week in school holidays, no more than 8 hours a day

Children must have a 1-hour rest break after working for 4 hours.

Prohibited jobs

Children cannot work in certain environments, such as factories, industrial sites, pubs or betting shops.
