Performance licences
Part of:
Child employment and entertainment
Children of compulsory school age who take part in performances must have a licence from the local authority. They must also be supervised by an approved chaperone, unless a parent or approved tutor is present.
A licence will only be granted if:
- the child is fit to take part
- their education will not suffer
- proper supervision is in place
- When a licence is needed
Children need a licence if they:
- perform on stage
- appear in TV, film, commercials or modelling work
- take part in paid sport
- are paid for the performance
- need to miss school
- perform for more than 4 days in 6 months
When a licence is not needed
- A licence is not needed if the child:
- has not performed on more than 4 days in the last 6 months
- is not being paid
- does not need to miss school
An exemption form, with a parent or guardian’s consent, must be submitted at least 21 days before the performance.
