Performance licences

Part of: Child employment and entertainment

Children of compulsory school age who take part in performances must have a licence from the local authority. They must also be supervised by an approved chaperone, unless a parent or approved tutor is present.

A licence will only be granted if:

  • the child is fit to take part
  • their education will not suffer
  • proper supervision is in place
  • When a licence is needed

Children need a licence if they:

  • perform on stage
  • appear in TV, film, commercials or modelling work
  • take part in paid sport
  • are paid for the performance
  • need to miss school
  • perform for more than 4 days in 6 months

When a licence is not needed

  • A licence is not needed if the child:
  • has not performed on more than 4 days in the last 6 months
  • is not being paid
  • does not need to miss school

An exemption form, with a parent or guardian’s consent, must be submitted at least 21 days before the performance.
