Each signature must include an address within the borough where the person lives, works, or studies.
Ordinary petitions
- must be supported by at least 50 people
- fewer than 50 signatures may be accepted where there is clear local support, such as residents of a small community requesting traffic calming
Petitions that require debate
- must be supported by at least 300 people
- are debated by the Executive or the relevant committee if the issue is not an Executive function
Petitions calling senior council employees to account
- must be supported by at least 1,500 people
- allow a senior council employee to be asked to give evidence at a public meeting
