About the project
The purpose of the Flixton community streets trial is to
- address issues raised by residents and people who use the area.
- make the streets safer for all road users to enjoy.
- create quieter, calmer residential areas where everyone feels safe on the streets.
Benefits of the trial
This trail was to help make the area safer and more enjoyable for everyone who lives, works and spends time in the area. We anticipated that there were lots of benefits to the trial such as:
- Feeling safer/feeling safer to let your children play on the streets
- Reducing noise and air pollution
- Reducing the number of cut throughs made using the side roads off of Flixton Road
- Safer commutes by increasing pedestrian access to and from Flixton station
- Making it easier to walk, cycle or wheel short journeys and for children to get to school in an active way
- Reducing the speed along Irlam Road
Trial details
We implemented the following as part of the trial.
20mph speed limit
Extended the 20mph speed limit on Irlam Road and installed a speed indicator sign to raise awareness. To help reduce speeding on Irlam Road and make the area safer for everyone.
Traffic light-controlled T-junction
A traffic light-controlled T-junction incorporated improved pedestrian and cycle facilities. To try to cut down congestion at the Irlam Road and Flixton Road junction. Particularly during peak times around local schools.
Moving a modal filter
Moving a modal filter (road closure) 100m west to the corner where Western Road meets Brooklyn Avenue. Separating the two roads again and putting things back the way they were.
Pedestrian crossings
Two additional signalised pedestrian crossing facilities proposed across:
- Carrington Road between Hampstead Avenue and Church Road
- Carrington Road to Morris Grove
To allow safer pedestrian access to Flixton station and St Michaels Primary School.
Consultations
Initial consultations began in January 2020, where we received around 3,400 comments on our proposed schemes as part of the Urmston Active Neighbourhood. You can read the decision report and results summary.
Following this consultation and decision, we developed the trail.
We ran another consultation from 27 September to 6 December 2024.
